The Secret To Tithing

The following post was written by a member of our fellowship.

God gave us the Holy Spirit to direct, teach, and instruct us, and He has blessed us with various resources and spiritual gifts.

As Christians, our goal should be to use all of our God-given resources and gifts wisely, simply because God expects it of us, and not just because we expect blessings in return.  We must always remember that we are accountable to God for how we use these resources and gifts.  One such resource is our money, and our responsibility to tithe.  How we respond to this responsibility could, according to God’s Word, bring a blessing or a curse.  In Malachi 3:8-10, God’s Word says,

‘“Will a man rob God?  Yet you have robbed Me!  But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed you?’  In tithes and offerings.  You are cursed with a curse, for you have robbed Me, even this whole nation.  Bring all the tithes into the storehouse that there may be food in My house.  And try Me now in this,” says the Lord of Hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.  Bring all the tithes into the storehouse that there may be food in My house.”’

“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse that there may be food in My house.”
God commanded that all the tithes must go into the storehouse.  The storehouse is His House…the church.  They are intended to go into the church to be used to edify and exalt Christ; therefore, when we are faithful in giving our tithes and offerings, we are helping others to learn about Christ and to provide for His Church.  This is a way we honor and worship God as our provider.  Be mindful of the fact that giving a tithe or offering doesn’t mean you now have a ticket to heaven.  Our motives for giving are important to God, and only when done properly will we receive God’s blessings.

The word “tithe” is the Hebrew word for a tenth (or ten percent), placed upon the firstfruits.  Today’s proper application of a tithe is based upon earnings, given as earnings are received.  Offerings are anything given in addition to a tithe (given at any time).  We need to pray for the Holy Spirit to give us wisdom and understanding of the importance of tithing and  giving offerings.  If you are a parent, consider the fact that you have a unique opportunity to introduce your children to the importance of tithing.  Perhaps they could begin tithing at an early age by giving some of their allowance to God.

It has been said that Jesus taught on tithing.  If so, to whom did He teach?  In Matthew 23:23 Jesus acknowledged to the Pharisees that tithing was their duty, but He rebuked them for passing over the more important parts of the law which were judgment, mercy, faith, and the love of God.  Clearly Jesus did not denounce tithing.  Rather, He denounced using tithing as a way of evading “the weightier matters of the law,” which demanded real sacrifice.  The Lord says that giving even in small matters is something that should not be neglected.

Consider what 1 Timothy 6:10 tells us about money:  “The love (lust) of money is the root of all kinds of evil.”  Money itself is not the problem.  When money is in the right hands, it is a solution and not a problem.  However, lasting happiness is not found in money or career success.  Does that mean these things are wrong?  Certainly not!  When you put God first He will actually give you these things (Matt. 6:33).  However, you must never let anything God gives you rob Him of being in first place in your life.

So, will a man rob God?  Apparently, as we read in Malachi, the answer is “yes.”  By not giving our tithes and offerings we have robbed God, thereby robbing ourselves of God’s blessings.  However, if we give our tithes grudgingly, expecting that God is obligated to provide a return, we are also now robbing ourselves of a chance to experience a blessing in our own heart and spirit.   2 Corinthians 9:7 tells us that we are to give with joy as we are led to give not by compulsion.  We can do the right thing for the wrong reason and still not be blessed, or we can have an abundance of material blessings and still be spiritually bankrupt.  The farmer who sows his seed doesn’t lose his seed.  Rather, he gains a harvest.  However, can you imagine the farmer praying this prayer, “God give me a crop.  I am trusting You to get involved, but I’m holding on to my seed ‘just in case.’”  This would make no practical sense!  When you sow generously for the right reasons God gets involved with your finances, for it is God who gives you power to get wealth that He may establish His covenant (Deut. 8:18).  Proverbs 11:25 also tells us that the generous soul will be made rich.

When you give, it enables God to return to you even more, which then, in turn, enables you to give even more!  Get the picture?  It goes on and on.  The law of giving is like the law of gravity…it never fails.  It provides us with a privilege to go into partnership with God, as He has promised to “pour out to you blessings” (Malachi 3:10).  Nowhere else in Scripture can you find God’s willingness to be challenged or tested.  Wow!  What an opportunity that is opened up to God’s children!

The bottom line is that we need to get serious about God in our lives.  We should not be looking for a reason not to pay a tithe, but rather structure a method whereby we can be successful in giving our tithe.  So examine yourself to see what area are you lacking in.  Have you somehow gone off the path?  Do your actions say, “I will trust God, I will give Him my heart, I will give Him my praise and I will give Him my thanksgiving, but will I not support His work financially?”

You must realize that God is the secret and the source of all your blessings, and He is looking for honest obedience in every area of your life.  He has a plan for your life.  Otherwise you would not be here!

Consider this: open up a new portal to God’s blessings in your life.  Try tithing and giving offerings for one year.  Do this by simply following what God has given you for the proper results.

“Try Me now in this,” says the Lord of Hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.”  This is the secret to tithing.
